There is no doubt both would provide an excellent vacation experience however, you've got to understand that both are very different in nature.
For example, a cruise will provide the opportunity to see just about all of Hawaii. The downside of course is you'll be working within a strict itinerary and won't get to spend the time at each port you'd like.

With a land-based holiday, you set your own itinerary. If you just want to spend your time on one or two islands then that's your decision. You'll have plenty of time to explore the beauty and magic Hawaii has to offer.
Making a decision of an Hawaiin cruise or a land holiday will depend on two things. Whether you plan to make more than one trip to the islands or whether you r budget will allow you the opportunity of just one visit in the forseeable future.
If you intend to make several trips then what about taking a cruise for your initial foray followed up by a land vacation at a future time.
Benefits Of Cruising First
The benefit of this is by cruising first, you'll have the opportunity to get a good look at what Hawaii has to offer. In other words, you will try before you buy. An Hawaiin cruise over 7-10 days will visit several ports. There may be one that takes your fancy and it could be that this will influence your decision to come back and visit at a future date.
So if your cruise happens to visit the islands of Maui, Oahu and Kauai and Kauai really takes your fancy and you would like to see more of it, then you can plan to come back for your next vacation and spend most of your time there.
Bear in mind if you are an explorer and like to give a destination the once over without feeling rushed then you will be better off with a land vacation. The other advantage concerns dining.
On a cruise you will be mostly restricted to dining on the ship and while this is first class, you'll be limited in how much of the excellent Hawaiin cuisine you can actually sample.
In the final analysis, decide exactly what you want from a vacation; you're either happy to holiday within a strict itinerary and get to sample more of the product, in which case, an Hawaiin cruise is the best option or you simply prefer to set your own agenda and vacation without any restrictions.
