Art and music is something that is very predominant in the Bahamian culture. Medicine practiced in the Bahamas is very plant based, healers on the island using indigenous plants to make remedies to relieve just about any illness one can think of. An Interview With Carnival's New President - Gerry Cahill
After 35 years at Carnival Cruises, legendary President, Bob Dickinson has made the decision to retire. Filling his shoes will be a familiar face at Carnival, that of Gerry Cahill former Chief Financial Officer, who has been with the organization since 1994. While Bob Dickinson will be a member of the Carnival board, Gerry is officially at the helm. I had the privilege of discussing with Gerry his new position and other points of interest.
ROY: Gerry, what influenced you to study accounting in college?
GERRY: I started college as a finance major and freshman year at the University of Miami I took Introductory Accounting. I kind of liked it because it was very logical. I have a brain that thinks very logically so I changed my major to accounting and stayed in it.
ROY: How did Howard Frank pursue you to jump ship and join Carnival Corporation?
GERRY: I don't know if I jumped ship. Howard knew me back at Paine Webber. I worked with him. Howard was the audit partner at Resorts International so we had a relationship. Then he moved me to Wyoming and I agreed I would go to Wyoming for two years. After that my family and I decided we really wanted to go back to south Florida. Wyoming is such a beautiful area but it is a little colder than usual for someone used to going around in a pair of shorts and t-shirt in January. Howard read in the papers that I was coming back so he called me since we had a relationship. So it worked and I was very fortunate. Life is funny like that. Sometimes you wind up in the right place accidentally.
ROY: How did CEO Micky Arison approach you and offer you the position of President? Did you have any time to think about it?
GERRY: I had a lot of time to think about it because Micky had been bouncing different ideas off me for a few years to take a position in the operations side. Micky has always liked that executives have operating experience and I happen to agree with him. So I've had a lot of time to think about the issue of whether I wanted to go into operations prior to Bob deciding that he was going to retire. The day that Micky actually walked into my office and asked me, I already had plenty of time to think about it so it took me about 10 seconds.
ROY: What do you feel Carnival employees will miss most about Bob once he retires?
GERRY: The people in the organization have really welcomed me better than I ever anticipated and I think it's going very well. Bob has been a tremendous supporter of mine and has handled the transition better than anything I could ask for.
ROY: Do you feel that the new fuel surcharge will have any effect on bookings?
GERRY: We are anticipating and certainly hoping it won't but time will tell. We don't really expect that it will have any negative impact.
ROY: Do you have any new ideas on how to increase onboard revenue in your fleet of ships?
GERRY: We are always looking at new things but to me it is a very, very delicate balance because you don't want to ever give the impression to guests that you're nickel and diming them these days. The idea is to try to find new things for guests that were not available in the past but that they would have an interest in paying for. There are some different things that we're looking at that will evolve over time. It's just this year that we're going through a complete upgrade of the gift shops and all the merchandising in there. We've spent a lot of time in trying to upgrade the quality of the products and I think it's going to work. But there are other things that are in the works that I'm not ready to talk about yet.
ROY: On average, in your former position with Carnival Corporation, how many hours did you normally work per week? As President of Carnival do you plan on working and traveling more?
GERRY: This would scare people! In my old job I don't actually know but if I had to guess I probably worked 60 - 65 hours per week. Throughout my entire career I've been a worker. I love work and I get a real high out of what I've done and I love the job I had before. Since I've been in charge of Carnival Cruise Lines, I can't remember taking a day off but I don't anticipate that's going to go on forever. I'm going through a transition and obviously there's a lot of learning for me at this point in time. Hopefully I can moderate it as I go forward but right now it's basically seven days a week.
ROY: What made your company go outside the Carnival family to bring in a new marketing director? What qualities in Ruben Rodriguez attracted you?
GERRY: When Bob was President, Carnival Cruise Lines had already started a search for a Chief Marketing Officer. When I came in I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to do with respect to that search. The position had not been filled at that point. But what I decided after I met with Ruben during the PCG work he was going for Carnival Cruise Lines about 1 ½ years ago was that I was very impressed with him.
He has a tremendous strategic mind and so I saw an opportunity there to bring in someone that had the tactical sense and an excellent understanding of how to marry your marketing and your guest experience together and how important it is that they go together well. So to me it was a great opportunity to bring in a fresh viewpoint, to bring in somebody that had this experience to help us really get the marketing to work better with the product itself. Bob has said this over the years - that we don't get the pricing that our products deserve. Ruben's task is to help us get the pricing.
ROY: Do you plan on ever doing a President's cruise for concierge club members in the future?
GERRY: That is a question that I don't know the answer to. Nobody has asked me that question yet. That's an interesting question though. I'm not adverse to it. I'd have to talk to and see what think about it.
ROY: Living in Florida most of your life, did you have a hard job convincing your family to move to Wyoming to take the position with Safecard?
GERRY: No... I'll tell you a little bit about my style. Before we made the decision to move I flew the entire family to Wyoming. We went out there for about 5 days and I said if we go it's because everyone decides we want to go. It's kind of my style as I like to include people. I don't make all the decisions but I always include people in the decision-making process so we all went out there and the entire family voted to go. It was a truly great experience but we were happier living in south Florida because of the weather.
ROY: I recently read that your last family vacation was a bike trip to Ireland. Did your family have more time together versus on a cruise vacation? Did they all enjoy it?
GERRY: It's interesting. I think we probably had about the same amount of time together. At this stage with my daughters being grown adults I'll do anything I can to get the family together. Over the years we've probably done 15, 16 or 17 cruise vacations together with the family. We had actually come up with the idea of a bike vacation when I was on a cruise in Alaska. The concept of going on a bike was great since we're all very physically active .
My wife and daughters are huge runners so the idea of going and doing something physically challenging was very attractive to them so I used that as a lure to get the whole family together. My one daughter lives in London and the other lives in Tampa. They are both gone and so if I could come up with an idea to get the whole family together I would do it... I would pay for it... whatever it takes.
ROY: Let's say in 3 years Micky asks you to replace him as Chairman. What would be your answer?
GERRY: I don't think that far down the road. I have one thought in mind today and that is to really do a great job as president of Carnival Cruise Lines. I will take what happens tomorrow but you know what - first I have to do a great job as president of Carnival Cruise Lines. If Micky would ask me that down the road that would come probably because of the fact I had done a great job at Carnival Cruise Lines, so listen, I'm happy to be here.

I often find it difficult to decide what to do for the summer, even when it comes to deciding where to go on holiday. For me holidays have to be relaxing, somewhere preferably warm, but with the option of being active. One thing I have not yet tried is approaching a yacht charter specialist. The idea of travelling around on a sailing boat seems more fun and exciting than staying static on an island - though there is nothing more appealing than lying on a beach with a cool beverage in one hand.
The option for a yacht charter holiday can be expensive. They often range between 1000 pounds - 25000, pounds so opting for this kind of holiday will require a lot of scrimping and saving but is worth the extra expenditure in the end. Those that do decide on a sailing holiday will have the option of going for a skippered or bareboat yacht charter. They are available for those interested in travelling around the coast of the Greek Islands or exploring the Indian coast. Unless you are very sensitive and suffer from motion sickness, then there are a few things to have in mind before going for this kind of holiday.

When I began researching various holiday destinations and yacht charter, I came across two very unfamiliar terms - skipper and bareboat. What is a skippered and bareboat yacht charter? Quite simply a skippered yacht contains a skipper or captain who controls the crew and the yacht, or just the yacht if you choose not to have the extra crew. This word originates from the Dutch for schipper or schip meaning ship. The English use this word more than the word Captain for specific types of boats and yachts. The charterer in this case does not have possession of the boat, even though they have the option to choose where to sail.
Bareboat is quite literally hiring a boat bare - no crews or a skipper in sight! The owners give up possession of the boat for a length of time, leaving the charterer responsible for their own provisions and crew. Therefore, this option is more for the yachting experts who are confident in skippering their own boats. This is not an option for a newbie like me, but bareboat yacht charter is popular with those who are more experienced and/or holding a Coastal Skipper Qualification at hand.

Yacht chartering businesses do require their customers to have some degree of yachting experience. Although some yacht charter businesses offer skippers and crews, those interested in bareboat yachts will need to know something about anchoring and mooring. Often a skipper is hired for the day, for those who are in need of a little more help in this technique, but if you choose to sail independently, you are most likely going to have to provide evidence of any suitable experience you have had.
Experience of sailing come at different levels, usually those wanting to sail around the Mediterranean coast can have a basic knowledge of yachting. The further people want to travel to, such as Australia or Vietnam, the more experience, knowledge or qualifications they will need in order to hire a boat.
One thing is for certain, if you do fancy stopping by at a beach for a bit of rest and relaxation, and maybe even a top up on your tan then those travelling independently on a yacht can do this at any point in time. The beauty of sailing is that you do not have to worry about checking in at a hotel and you are not restricted to any curfews. This may not be the case for larger luxury yachts with hired crewmembers, but you are guaranteed the experience of travelling to more than one destination on the island.

What Makes The Bahamas Unique?
Every culture has they own idiosyncrasies that make them who they are. The Bahamas and their people are no different. Born of varied nationalities and heritages, they have combined each into one large mass that is entirely their own. Most of the people who call the Bahamas their home are of West African descent, their ancestors being slaves until the practice was abolished by the British in 1834. The rest of the inhabitants are descended from white settlers who either emigrated to the islands to escape religious persecution or were Loyalists who fled the United States during the American Revolution. These two groups have formed a rich culture that is uniquely their own.
Because the islands lacked fertile land for crops, the people who lived there became very proficient sea farers, learning to live off of the sea by sponging, fishing, and, in later years, gunrunning and for some, piracy. Their laidback and relaxed ways are from being able to enjoy what is about them, from food to shelter to employment. They love life and marriage celebrations start weeks before the wedding. Funerals celebrate the life of the grieved long after they are gone. They are friendly, adventurous, and very willing to share their islands and their gifts with you.
Art and music is something that is very predominant in the Bahamian culture. Tourists will find brightly coloured arts and crafts everywhere they go and will see it reflected in the many outfits the local people wear. The music is varied, a combination of African, English, and native Calypso. It is very rhythmic and usually features drums of every sort, from skin covered to steel. Some of the native music was actually used to accompany dances such as the Bahamian Quadrille and the Heel and Toe Polka, a perfect blending of the populace's cultures. Visitors who are lucky enough to attend a Junkanoo parade will be treated to colourful costumes and dancing that has origins in West Africa.
Because of the tourist trade, a visitor there can find just about any food they want. The one thing they need to do, though, is sampled the local cuisine. Seafood based, it includes dishes made with conch, lobster, crab, and fish. Souse, a soup unique to the area, is made of water, onions, lime juice, celery, peppers and meat, which could be chicken, sheep's tongue, oxtail, or pig's feet. And never expect Bahamian cooking to be anything less than spicy.
Medicine practiced in the Bahamas is very plant based, healers on the island using indigenous plants to make remedies to relieve just about any illness one can think of. This practice is called bush medicine and they are very adept at its practice. With over a hundred different plants across the islands, such as Aloe Vera, Spanish Sage, and Bagarina to use, it's no wonder they are so good at healing.
Shopping is one of the biggest tourist trades across the islands and one of the most famous markets is the Straw Market on Nassau. Half the fun is being able to haggle with the many vendors and crafters located there and American visitors do not have to worry about exchanging their dollars for something else as it is accepted throughout the islands. English is the main language spoken there, but the syncopated rhythm in the native's speech is also unique to them, a flavourful mixture of the Queen's English, African influence, and centuries of making it uniquely their own.

Knowledge about boat lifts is probably reserved for those who actually possess a boat. They used to be known as davits, and the common image which comes to mind when hearing the term is that of a large ocean liner. However, that's not necessarily the case. Before the seventies, a davit system was used in order to lift boats; either that or a pair of davits that consisted of a front and a rear system of cables. These were linked to the holes on a boat while the davits' arms were usually tied to a pier.
It took nothing more than turning a winch, and some cables, which were attached to the boat and the davits, completed the task of lifting the boat from the water. Although davits are still used, most people nowadays prefer using boat lifts. The difference is that boat lifts offer support for the boat, which comes to underneath, unlike davits that use cables which can put a lot of pressure on the rib system of a smaller, less solid boat.
In the eighties, however, a new design swept the nation, and the whole world, for that matter. It does cost more, that's true, but rust is completely out of the question, and since it's resistant to corrosion, a neat appearance lasts longer.

What Makes The Bahamas Unique?
Every culture has they own idiosyncrasies that make them who they are. The Bahamas and their people are no different. Born of varied nationalities and heritages, they have combined each into one large mass that is entirely their own. Most of the people who call the Bahamas their home are of West African descent, their ancestors being slaves until the practice was abolished by the British in 1834. The rest of the inhabitants are descended from white settlers who either emigrated to the islands to escape religious persecution or were Loyalists who fled the United States during the American Revolution. These two groups have formed a rich culture that is uniquely their own.
Because the islands lacked fertile land for crops, the people who lived there became very proficient sea farers, learning to live off of the sea by sponging, fishing, and, in later years, gunrunning and for some, piracy. Their laidback and relaxed ways are from being able to enjoy what is about them, from food to shelter to employment. They love life and marriage celebrations start weeks before the wedding. Funerals celebrate the life of the grieved long after they are gone. They are friendly, adventurous, and very willing to share their islands and their gifts with you.
Art and music is something that is very predominant in the Bahamian culture. Tourists will find brightly coloured arts and crafts everywhere they go and will see it reflected in the many outfits the local people wear. The music is varied, a combination of African, English, and native Calypso. It is very rhythmic and usually features drums of every sort, from skin covered to steel. Some of the native music was actually used to accompany dances such as the Bahamian Quadrille and the Heel and Toe Polka, a perfect blending of the populace's cultures. Visitors who are lucky enough to attend a Junkanoo parade will be treated to colourful costumes and dancing that has origins in West Africa.
Because of the tourist trade, a visitor there can find just about any food they want. The one thing they need to do, though, is sampled the local cuisine. Seafood based, it includes dishes made with conch, lobster, crab, and fish. Souse, a soup unique to the area, is made of water, onions, lime juice, celery, peppers and meat, which could be chicken, sheep's tongue, oxtail, or pig's feet. And never expect Bahamian cooking to be anything less than spicy.
Medicine practiced in the Bahamas is very plant based, healers on the island using indigenous plants to make remedies to relieve just about any illness one can think of. This practice is called bush medicine and they are very adept at its practice. With over a hundred different plants across the islands, such as Aloe Vera, Spanish Sage, and Bagarina to use, it's no wonder they are so good at healing.
Shopping is one of the biggest tourist trades across the islands and one of the most famous markets is the Straw Market on Nassau. Half the fun is being able to haggle with the many vendors and crafters located there and American visitors do not have to worry about exchanging their dollars for something else as it is accepted throughout the islands. English is the main language spoken there, but the syncopated rhythm in the native's speech is also unique to them, a flavourful mixture of the Queen's English, African influence, and centuries of making it uniquely their own.
